Help with WebDAV 429 Error and Understanding Request Limitations on Icedrive

I received a 429 error indicating that I’ve been temporarily limited due to too many requests when trying to use WebDAV to sync files from a cloud service to Icedrive.

I now carefully minimize the number of requests by using only one thread and limiting the daily sync amount, but I’m still encountering this error even after waiting for a month. Can anyone explain where these limitations might be coming from?

Hey @WTCwerner the issue with WebDAV is that a small minority of users heavily abuse the WebDAV service so the rate limits come into play causing a user-wide restriction. We’re actually about to release our brand new drive app with all new sync feature onto MacOS, Linux and Windows so that you can sync your files without any of the associated issues that can arise from WebDAV. Keep an eye out on our community and social media pages for the full release.

Could you clarify the limitations I’m working with? Currently, I’m being blocked even when trying to use WebDAV, and it stops me immediately with the same error code.

All I’m trying to do is use a program to sync my Google Drive with Icedrive cloud for backup purposes. I don’t need it to be fast, and I’ve already manually copied all my data. Now, I just need to sync any new files and folders.

@Chris Do we have any deadline for the new clients? The rate-limits are very limiting (pun un-intended), nearly unusable, to be honest. I’ve a ton of files and I’m feeling locked-in since I can’t move my files systematically using WebDav.

HI, after using the new Mac drive app for about a month, I’ve tried reverting to WebDAV. The app is not reliable enough: syncs don’t start readily (have to re-pair each time to kick them off, which is annoying) and deletion on my local drive is not reflected on Icedrive in the cloud (so a build-up of old files happens…yes I have tried changing the deletion settings in the app, to no avail). All in all, a disappointing experience. WebDAV seems heavily throttled back right now, so I have no reliable fast way of synching between local drive and cloud. Not good at all.

Please follow-up. Multiple users, myself included, find the new v3 mount and sync’s “sync” feature unreliable and would still prefer to use webdav. Webdav still appears to be kneecapped due to direct choices made by icedrive. The team still appears to be doing nothing to remedy this. Please provide more details with more specifics. How can we avoid rate limiting, if at all possible? How can you address the issue of some users ruining it for all, while the rest of us with reasonable needs suffer? Is there any future possibility of webdav actually being usable with icedrive, or should we look elsewhere if this is a need of ours?

I’m echoing @WTCwerner 's request (unanswered from 1.5 months ago!) to please clarify what the actual limitations are here.

I’m sure it must be hard to manage bandwidth usage with a service like yours, but last I tried, your webdav implementation is so limited that it’s useless even for syncing notes with Joplin. I had to revert to onedrive to get the job done. I tried to educate myself more before asking, but the top results for “webdav rate limit” all point to this forum, even in an incognito window. Not a great look for icedrive. I’m not an expert in these protocols, but it’s the year 2024, in the internet age. Surely there is a difference on the server side between, say, 10kb of data and one login, or 2+TB of data and multiple logins. Do you really have no control of this at the admin level? The explanation that some users are abusing the service makes some sense, until you can’t sync simple text notes.

Is there really no way that you can adjust the limits? You already have bandwidth limits in place with uploads and downloads through the web app or desktop/mobile apps. Does webdav not allow you to set similar per-account limits that are greater, than, say, 1 login and several kb? Can you please be more transparent about what the limits actually are and how we can use this advertised and paid service? Or if it’s really that impossible to thread this needle, can you please just kill webdav and stop teasing us?

@tambo Thanks!
I’d also like to understand the limitations so I can adjust the settings accordingly and ensure we stay within the maximum allowance.

Hi @Chris,

you mentioned “the issue with WebDAV is that a small minority of users heavily abuse the WebDAV service so the rate limits”.

Could you limit and target these users specifically ?

It’s been a while that this issue is comment and wanted by many users.

I only use webdav to sync my notes on Joplin app. It’s like 100kb… I really dont understand this limit. Only sync couple of notes, not sync an entire disk and TB of data!

Please can you fix it and give us an update about this ?

Thank you

Yup, this is the issue for me too. “Users who take advantage of the service ruin it for everybody” makes sense until I, like you, tried to sync less than 1mb of notes on Joplin and was rate limited. It’s pathetic that I have to use onedrive as a fallback for something as straightforward and simple as a single login syncing text notes.

@Tom

You expressed interest in my specific complaints regarding WebDAV problems in a recent support ticket I submitted.

“Additionally, we noticed your mention of problems with WebDAV—could you provide more details about the issues you’re experiencing there?”

I pointed you towards the litany of forum posts like this one. If you are genuinely interested in improving the product and service, here’s a whole thread of more details for you to chew over. Go wild.

Then again, that ticket was automatically closed by Bear Bot with no follow up after my initial response, so, you know…
