Confirming My Windows Understanding of Sync

I have read gentle_walk … 23 Aug 2023 Understanding Sync Behaviour, and samso … Full Sync vs Backup. I want to confirm my understanding of the recent Icedrive update on Windows.
Given I have a folder on my laptop hard drive that I want to put on Icedrive cloud and to keep in sync. I have chosen Backup for the type and Do Not Copy for both Local and Remote, are the following accurate assuming Icedrive app is running and has had time to transfer.?

  1. Local refers to my computer’s hard drive and the folder I have created there. One in DOCUMENTS for example.
  2. Remote refers to the Icedrive cloud and appears when I log in on Icedrive.net
  3. Mounted refers to the folder under Icedrive when I look at my Windows overall directory.
  4. In other words, the lists Remote and Mounted can be considered the same list..
  5. Any change I make to the Local Folder (or its contents) is reflected in both Mounted and Remote
  6. Any change I make in either Mounted or Remote is NOT made in Local.

Thanks for your patience. Please confirm or correct the above.

Hi @ChuckB

You’re mostly correct, but it’s important to note that changes made via the mounted drive won’t sync locally when using Backup or Full Sync. This is because the sync process is tied to a unique device ID. Any changes made locally on the same device within the virtual drive won’t trigger synchronization to the cloud. To get around this, make changes from another device or through the web app, and the sync will pick up those updates and reflect them across all devices.

Thank you, Tom, and if I understand you…the terms: virtual drive and my term mounted drive mean the same thing… Icedrive files on my laptop,

So a way to think about the conditions I suggested, is to say - if I only add, delete, or modify files on my original hard drive (local drive) I can expect them to be synced to Icedrive assuming I have them in a synced folder. And if I choose to delete a file, it will still remain in both Icedrive locations unless I delete it through the (remote) web app. Does that make sense?
I apologize for being over-detailed. I am 82 years old, an ex-engineer, and need to understand the multiple terms and their function.

I think deleting files on on your local drive is needed providig you allow the remote app to delete changes or local files which would pick them possibly up
I see it as the local drive / remote drives are the master but the virtual local drive is a slave of both the local drive folder or remote folder …
deleting is triggered through your settings

I don’t think your age is the problem. I am 43 years old and also had trouble understanding how Icedrive works. I think Icedrive lacks a good manual to guide the user through the process and explain exactly how the software behaves. (Or have I overlooked that manual?)

I have already asked Icedrive to provide their customers with a User Manual, I am not sure they’ll do it. Maybe they think their app is quite simple (which is true), yet I do believe a user guide is required.
I’m glad I’m not the only one expecting this

Chuck, Guido, all. I can confirm it is not age dependent. I’ve been in tech for a few decades, and the IceDrive Sync behavior still remains difficult (often a mystery) to understand. I run test after test, (lots of time) just to “see what it does.” Overall I like IceDrive and their communication on issues, so I purchased a 1tb subscription. And though I love the privacy they offer over the massive players(goog, amzn, etc.), as of now, the frustrations may outweigh the security benefits.

I thank you all for your replies. A simple table, that illustrates the local and remote result of various combinations of settings would do a lot to relieve my constant “fiddling” to find out and then forgetting it. :see_no_evil:

However, I also, like the product and will continue to pay for it.
